Slip The Surly Bonds of Earth

p40-2

Bob Baranaskas, a veteran pilot, and founder of Warbirds over Long Island, died today when his restored World War II P 40 Warhawk crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Smith Point Park.  Bob was practicing for an upcoming air show.

Mike Biedenkapp, 30, of Patchogue, was watching the fighter plane from a parking lot near the beach when he saw the plane take a nose-dive.

“He climbed up, then came down like a corkscrew,” said Biedenkapp, who ran toward the beach when he saw the plane disappear behind the dunes.

Witnesses saw a puff of black smoke, then the plane hit the water, sending up a 20-foot splash.

Here is a video of Bob and other pilots flying a number of P-40s at the Geneseo, NY, airshow in July, 2008.

Bob was a resident of Northport, NY.
