BAQUBAH — With beads of sweat rolling down their neck, Soldiers from 2nd Sqdrn, 2nd Stryker Cav Regt, labored away alongside members of the IA and SoI sweeping suspected Al-Qaida forces out of 2 separate villages south of Baqubah during Op Cougar Storm recently.
The op was designed to deny Al-Qaida forces a place to stage IED attacks along key routes that CF and Iraqi civilians use, as well as establish an IA presence in the area, said 1st Lt. Fernando Pelayo, a plt leader.
“The op was a success. In addition to clearing the villages of Al-Qaida and expanding GOI authority to the south, over 10 IED’s were found and safely detonated on Route Lime. This will give CF and Iraqi SF greater Freedom of Maneuver in the area,” Eickstedt said.
“The IA performed extremely well.  IA Soldiers took the lead in clearing both areas.  One IA Soldier lost his life to a House-Borne IED, but the IA Soldiers were not deterred. Their country should be proud of their efforts,” said Eickstedt.

BAGHDAD – CF disrupted an AQI bombing cell and captured 4 suspected terrorists during ops around Iraq July 5 and 6.
An op July 5,  near Iskandariyah, about 45 km south of Baghdad, targeted a man believed to coordinate suicide car bombings.  CF detained 7 suspected terrorists.
Four precision ops July 6 targeted wanted men for their alleged ties to AQI.  In Sharqat, about 90 km south of Mosul, CF targeted a weapons facilitator who led a cell of terrorists in the area.  When the force arrived to apprehend him, the terrorist refused to comply with their instructions to surrender, and was killed.
CF nabbed a wanted man suspected of facilitating the movement of foreign terrorists into Iraq during an op in Husaybah, near the Iraq-Syria border.
Another wanted man is in CF’ custody after his alleged AQI associates provided info that led to an op in Bayji, about 160 km south of Mosul. The man is also suspected of helping foreign terrorists travel into the Tigris River Valley to conduct attacks.
In Baghdad, CF captured a suspect assessed to be involved with bomb distribution and placement.  He is also believed to be tied to several regional AQI networks.
