AAR West Point Independence Day Parade 2008

It was a wonderful day for Eagles at West Point. Eagles from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts joined our New Yorkers to make this a great turnout for a fantastic event. From the pre-parade Reception at the Thayer Hotel to the fireworks display at dusk, Highland Falls welcomed us with open arms.
Mayor Joe D’Onofrio introduced us at the reception and even had a Gathering of Eagles flag hung over the front of the podium!
We heard excellent speakers including our own, Kieran Lalor, State Senator William Larkin, himself a decorated veteran, and the Brigade Commander of the 10th Mountain Division “Polar Bears” unit stationed at West Point. All of these men and women had just returned from a tour in Afghanistan and received a standing ovation from all present. Rolling Thunder NY 3 had a contingent present as well as the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Korean War Veterans.

After the speeches we formed up by Buffalo Field in a place of honor just behind the 10th Mtn Div “Polar Bears” and stepped off out the Thayer Gate and down Main Street of “Hometown USA”. The parade watchers were very supportive with cheers and applause! The sight of so many men taking off their hats and pacing their hands over their hearts in patriotic deference to our sea of flags was heartwarming. We did have the largest number of flags for any contingent in the parade and we held them high and proud during our march.

Pictures are Here.

After the parade some of us stayed in town for the town party and fireworks display that evening. We had a great time talking and eating before the spectacular show lit up the skies!
